San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has been placed on injured reserve and will reportedly undergo surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, according to a tweet posted by NFL reporter Ian Rapoport, which can be seen below.

Kaepernick reportedly told the team that he wanted to have the surgery, prompting the 49ers to make the move, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. The 49ers have promoted quarterback Dylan Thompson to their active roster from the team's practice squad, according to the 49ers team website. It has already been reported that Kaepernick is "virtually certain" to not be back in San Francisco next season, and the 49ers quarterback may have already put on San Francisco's jersey for the last time.

Kaepernick signed a $126 million contract extension with San Francisco back in 2014, and that move is looking very costly for the 49ers. Kaepernick is under contract until the 2020 season, and the 49ers will look to move him this offseason if not cut him. Kaepernick's salary becomes fully guaranteed on April 1, and the resolution could come in February at the scouting combine, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

The 49ers are 3-6 on the season and are in last place in the NFC West. Quarterback Blaine Gabbert won his first start against the Atlanta Falcons, but San Francisco's front office will want to see more out of Gabbert before they commit to him as their future quarterback. Gabbert threw two touchdowns and two interceptions in a win over the Falcons 17-16, but he has a big challenge this weekend against the Seattle Seahawks. While Kaepernick's future in San Francisco looks all but over, Gabbert is still playing for a chance to earn a permanent position as the 49ers quarterback.
