Earlier last week Samsung came out with the next installment in its tablet designs, the formerly titled "Galaxy Note 10.1 - 2014 Edition." It is the second version of the 10.1-inch stylus-based tablet and comes with a bevy of multitasking features making the display more of a work space than a single window tablet display like the iPad or many other Android tablets.
The first of the multitasking featured offered on the device is the Multi-Window function that has been available in Samsung devices for about a year. However, it works with many more apps now. You can run two apps side by side such as Facebook on one side while watching a YouTube video on the other, according to an AP Review via USA Today. Unlike some of its competitors with multitasking, the Galaxy Note 10.1 allows you to decide how much of the display screen a window takes up.
While the Multi-Window function sounds like a revolutionary new idea that will change up the game for Samsung tablets, its important to note two things. The first is that Samsung still doesn't have every app available in Multi-Window. Apps like Netflix and Hulu Plus still won't work. Mostly it's just Facebook and other Google and Samsung-based apps. The second is that this function is available on Windows 8 tablets and will have display size customization for secondary apps coming with the Windows 8.1 update.
Another new stylus-heavy feature from the tablet by Samsung is the Pen Window. This allows users to draw a box with their included stylus and choose which app of up to seven they wish to open. They can keep doing this until all seven windows are open. Including Multi-Window, that's nine distinct windows on your display operating all at once. Each Pen Window reportedly appears in a window that floats over your main app.
The device's base model with 16GB is priced at $550 while the 32GB version runs $600. Versions with a cellular access plan aren't available in the U.S. as of yet. Unfortunately, the WiFi only models won't work with Samsung's new Galaxy Gear Smartwatch.
