The Tigers open the AL championship series in Boston after Justin Verlander closed out the division series on Thursday with a 3-0 over Oakland.
For Detroit, the story is their pitching rotation. Anibal Sanchez, the ERA champion, pitches on Saturday; Max Scherzer, the leader in the wins, throws on Sunday; and Verlander, the 2011 MVP and AL Cy Young winner, takes the mound on Tuesday.
"I feel like our rotation is relentless," said Verlander, via ESPN. "There's no sigh of relief. There's no break. Every day you're getting somebody that's really good."
Boston agrees.
"I don't think there are really any consolation prizes when you're playing them," said Red Sox slugger Dustin Pedroia. "All their guys are really good. ... All their guys are horses."
Red Sox pitcher Jake Peavy added: "You think that to not have to face Justin for the first few games is a relief until you realize this team doesn't stop. When you've got the ERA leader followed by Max Scherzer, who's probably going to win the Cy Young, there's a reason they are where they are."
Jon Lester opens the championship series for Boston. The Red Sox are confident Lester can duel with Sanchez; Lester is 2-0 with a 4.26 ERA against Detroit this year, according to ESPN.
The Red Sox put Tampa Bay away in four games, giving Lester a few extra days to rest.
"That's good for us for Jonny Lester not having to throw a Game 5 and going into this series on extended rest," said Boston pitcher Clay Buchholz, who's set to pitch Game 2. "He'll be in a good position from jump street and that's kind of what we've been doing all year, trying to feed off each other."
