Ahmed Adeeb, the vice-president of the Maldives, has been arrested on suspicion of links to to an alleged plot to assassinate the president, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs, BBC reported.

Adeeb has been detained and charged with high treason, said Umar Naseer, Minister of Home Affairs, via Twitter earlier today.

Maldives President Abdulla Yameen escaped unhurt, but his wife and two aides were injured in a bomb blast on his boat while returning to the nation's capital of Male from the airport after a hajj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia late last month, according to Reuters.

Senior police officers were sacked as a result of an investigation into the explosion, a week after the president fired his defense minister. 

"Vice President Ahmed Adheeb has been arrested under a warrant for the investigation into the blast on the presidential speedboat," Maldives police tweeted in the local Dhivehi language, according to Haveeru Online.
