FDA Approves Spray Treatment ‘Promescent’ for Premature Ejaculation

The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a spray treatment that can help “one-minute men” who often suffer from the emotional and relationship distress of premature ejaculation.

According to the International Society for Sexual Medicine, premature ejaculation (PE) happens when a man reaches his peak and releases his semen soon after penetration. How soon it is? Well, it is within a minute and some even have it in 15 seconds. The average ejaculation time is between four to eight minutes.

Such condition is truly embarrassing for men and can also be stressful for the women thus causing problems within the relationship. Its cause is still unclear though there were previous theories that it is caused by quick masturbation during adolescence, performance concerns, or having too little sex. Some try to distract themselves during the intercourse which is considered a self-treatment but there were a few who go to sex therapists.

Viagra is a famous drug for sexual dysfunctions but it is not the right treatment for PE. It is designed to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), a condition that prevents men from developing or keeping his erection. However, it causes the same distress for the couples.

Promescent is a product created by Absorption Pharmaceuticals. It is a spray treatment that men can apply 10 minutes before the deed to better manage his ejaculation time. It has lidocaine, a type of topical anesthesia, which will reduce the sensitivity of the penis lasting 30 minutes or even an hour depending on the dosage. This is good news as women’s average climax time is within 10 to 20 minutes.

Chief executive Jeff Abraham told CNBC, “It doesn't diminish the climax,” so losing sensitivity will not prevent the user from achieving sexual satisfaction as well.

Meanwhile, Viagra creator Dr. Mike Wyllie, has also made his own PE product called Tempe.
