At least eight Taliban militants were killed after they attacked a Pakistan Air Force base in northwestern city of Peshawar early Friday morning, security officials said. Director General of Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR), Major General Asim Bajwa, confirmed the attack on the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) base in the Badaber area of Peshawar city, reported News International.

Bajwa said that eight militants had been killed during the exchange of fire with security forces and a clearance operation was underway for the remaining hidden terrorists, according to ARY News. "Clearance operation is in progress. Latest figure of terrorists killed is 8.Own 10 soldiers injured including 2 officers," he tweeted.

The attack took place early in the morning when a group of nearly 10 armed gunmen entered the base. The Quick Reaction Force immediately reached the base, surrounded the attackers and engaged in a heavy exchange of fire.

"The attackers first went to the guard room. The quick response force had condoned the area while the situation remained unclear. Security forces have entered the base and are searching for attackers," a PAF official told Express Tribune.

Pakistan Taliban, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that a suicidal unit carried out the attack, according to BBC.

"We sent 14 men to attack the base and eight of them entered the base from one side and six from the other side," the Taliban spokesperson said in an emailed statement, according to Express Tribune.
