Toyota launched the 2016 Prius in a flashy event in Las Vegas Tuesday evening. The fourth generation Prius features an even bolder design as well as an additional 10 percent to the already incredible fuel economy rating of its predecessor.

The unveiling event was held in Linq Hotel and was attended by 350 spectators who were appropriately impressed with the specs sheet. "We've raised the bar" on efficiency, said Bob Carter, Senior Vice President at Toyota, according to USA Today. The 2015 Prius had an average of 50 miles per gallon, and the new variant pushes this further to 55 mpg. The Prius also has more passenger room, as Toyota decided to add several inches to its length and width. This last feature was supposedly introduced in order to respond to the waning interest in compact cars.

The design of the new Prius is a little polarizing. Some conclude that it veers towards the weird side. It was even likened to a shoe in a report from The Verge.

Toyota, however, has a different opinion. The striking exterior is "inspired by a runner in the starting blocks," and that, "the sporty design conveys a feeling of forward motion," the automaker said, Autoblog reported.

Still, it is important to note that the 2016 Prius follows the design philosophy of its previous iterations, and it is the world's bestselling hybrid today. The sterling sales seem to indicate that the consumers like the way it was built.

The new Prius will go on sale in early 2016, according to Toyota.
