CBS will not renew "Under the Dome" for a fourth season so the final episode of season three next month will work as the series finale.

"Under the Dome," based on the Steven King best-selling novel, will bring down the dome on Thursday, Sept. 10. The series premiered in June 2013 to a surprising 17.8 million (Live +7) viewers, the highest summer drama debut in 21 years, according to Deadline.

"Two years ago, 'Under the Dome' broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world," Nina Tassler, Chairman, CBS Entertainment, said in a statement. "'Dome's' event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of 'Extant' and 'Zoo.' We're excited to present the final chapter in Chester's Mill as the story comes full circle, with the Dome coming down as dramatically as it went up."

The final episode will answer many questions about the dome's origin and power, but not everyone will survive when two groups of residents engage in one final conflict.

CBS will likely renew "Zoo" with "Extant" on the fence for a third season renewal. The network has picked up a new drama series, "BrainDead," for next summer.

All three seasons of "Under the Dome" will remain available for streaming on Amazon Prime.

"Under the Dome" airs on Thursdays at 10 p.m. on CBS.
