North Korea's elusive communist leader Kim Jong Un hailed the recent peace agreement with South Korea, which came after a rare four-day period of talks between both countries.

Kim termed the marathon talks between North and South Korea as a "landmark occasion," saying the recent Korea accord paved the way for the chance to build trust between both sides, according to Yonhap news agency.

"The joint press release published at the contact provided a crucial landmark occasion of defusing the acute military tension and putting the catastrophic inter Korean relations on the track of reconciliation and trust," a Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) report quoted the North Korean leader as saying, according to Russia Today.

He made the rare and surprising remarks during a meeting of the Central Military Commission of the North Korean Workers Party on Wednesday.

Kim also claimed that North's nuclear and military power secured the "landmark" accord with South Korea, AFP reported.

The North Korean leader has reportedly dismissed some senior military officials in the meeting.

Kim Jong Un "dismissed some members of the WPK Central Military Commission and appointed new ones and dealt with an organizational matter," a KCNA report said, according to EFE news agency.

The Korean peninsula was on the verge of a war before both Koreas reaching a peace agreement earlier this week. The standoff began after a landmine attack by North Korea injured two South Korean soldiers earlier this month.
