Michelle Obama Overselling Benefits of Water, Health Experts Say

The first lady Michelle Obama went to Watertown, Wis. on Friday to persuade people to drink more water. While the intention was good, health experts commented that Mrs. Obama was overselling the benefits of water.

The move was part of her new program which aims to promote and create a Healthier America. However, as a natural reaction of different people, her latest program dragged criticisms.

In her speech, she persuaded people to drink an additional one glass of water every day in order to make a real difference in their energy, feelings and health.

Stanley Goldfarb, a professor of medicine at the Pennsylvania University told USA Today, "There really isn't data to support this. I think, unfortunately, frankly, they're not basing this on really hard science. It's not a very scientific approach they've taken. ... To make it a major public health effort, I think I would say it's bizarre."

The White House and its experts, on the other hand, claim that a lot of Americans do not drink enough water every day.

"Drinking water can help people maintain a healthy weight and may be an important strategy for preventing obesity. Even mild levels of dehydration may result in decreased concentration, alertness, and short-term memory among children and adults as well as diminished athletic performance," said Ursula E. Bauer, director of the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in an interview with USA Today.

The white house said while publicizing the first lady’s “Drink Up” program that for the families to remember the significance of drinking water, efforts of the PHA supporters will carry the “Drink Up” logo on half a billion water bottles, 300 million boxes of bottled waters, more than 10,000 reusable bottles, and 200,000 packages of reusable bottles in the succeeding year.
