Warner Bros., Hasbro and Sweetpea Entertainment have announced a movie franchise based on the widely popular role-playing game "Dungeons & Dragons," is in the works after a lengthy legal battle over screen rights, according to IGN.

"We are so excited about bringing the world of 'Dungeons & Dragons' to life on the big screen," said WB Pictures' Creative Development and Worldwide Production boss Greg Silverman. "This is far and away the most well-known brand in fantasy, which is the genre that drives the most passionate film followings. D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property," according to Deadline.

Screenwriter David Leslie Johnson, whose credits include "The Conjuring 2" and "Wrath of the Titans," has already written the script for film. The movie franchise will be a joint production between Warner Bros., Hasbro's Allspark Pictures and Sweetpea Entertainment with "The Lego Movie's" Roy Lee attached as a producer, CBS News reported.

Silverman is understandably optimistic about fantasy-genre movies, after the studio's hugely successful "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings" franchises. "Dungeons & Dragons" would be Warner Bros.' fourth major franchise in addition to the films based on DC Comics, J.K. Rowling's "Fantastic Beasts" book series and LEGO toys.
