Twitter announced the launch of its new video sharing service "Vine" through a blog on their website, Thursday.
The new video sharing service allows users to share short videos on their feeds and tweets. The service is available for free on the iOS App Store and twitter hopes to extend this service to other mobile platforms soon.
The blog read:
Today, we're introducing Vine: a mobile service that lets you capture and share short looping videos. Like Tweets, the brevity of videos on Vine (6 seconds or less) inspires creativity. Now that you can easily capture motion and sound, we look forward to seeing what you create.
You can read more about the app on the Vine blog. Vine is currently available on the iPhone and iPod touch. You can download it for free from the App Store. We're working now to bring it to other platforms, so stay tuned for that.
"Posts on Vine are about abbreviation - the shortened form of something larger. They're little windows into the people, settings, ideas and objects that make up your life. They're quirky, and we think that's part of what makes them so special," says Vine co-founder and general manager Dom Hofmann in a separate blog post. "We're also happy to share the news that Vine has been acquired by Twitter. Our companies share similar values and goals; like Twitter, we want to make it easier for people to come together to share and discover what's happening in the world. We also believe constraint inspires creativity, whether it's through a 140-character Tweet or a six-second video."
Hofmann also clarified that though Vine has joined Twitter, one doesn't need to have a Twitter account to use the service.
