"Plants vs. Zombies 2' Hits App Store As Free-To-Play Game With In-Game Content That Can Be Purchased (TRAILER)

"Plants vs. Zombies," the popular iPhone game responsible for selling more than 300,000 copies and making $1 million for publisher PopCap in its first nine days on the App Store in February 2010, finally has its sequel available to the public.

The sequel's title, "Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time" is a pun commenting on the plot of the game which forces the plants to defend against a slew of zombies in all different time periods thanks to a little bit of time-travel, as well as a jab at the studio for the long wait fans had to sit through before a sequel to the immensely popular game was made.

The biggest news surrounding "Plans vs. Zombies 2" is the switch from a paid app to what's known as a "freemium" app. In other words, the app is now free for all users to download, but there is certain in-game content that is now unavailable unless people want to spend real money to purchase it. This includes plants, characters, environments and more.

For free, users can explore new areas throughout time and out a stop to the zombie horde with a bevy of new plants like the "Bloomerang" which throws boomerangs that hits zombies on the first throw and the return trip. Users can travel to Ancient Egypt and the Wild West to battle in the popular tower defense game.

The game accomplishes time travel thanks to its story centers, which around Crazy Dave, the guy who sold items out of the trunk of his car in the first game. He enjoyed the taco you gave him so much that, in an act of desperation, he hops into a time machine to try and enjoy it again. Unfortunately he overshoots it a bit brining both plants and zombies to the past.

"Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time" is available for free as a 44.7MB download on the App store, according to AppleInsider.
