Plants vs. Zombies 2 Release Date: New Game Hits Stands July 18 With Several New Features (TRAILER)

PopCap, a division of Electronic Arts announced at E3 that they will be releasing the sequel to their incredibly popular touchscreen inspired tower defense game "Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's about Time" on July 18.

The title is a clever play on words that jabs at the fact that it's taken the developers so long to come out with a sequel and the game's use of time travel.

The story behind the game, according to Mashable, is that Crazy Dave, the man who sold things out of the trunk of his car in the first game, enjoyed the taco that you sold him in the first game so much that, in an act of desperation, he hopes in a time machine to try and go back and enjoy that taco again.

Crazy Dave overshoots a bit and ends up in Ancient Egypt. This is where the game play starts, eventually finding its player defending against a zombie hoard aboard a pirate ship and the in wild west.

The game play will be largely the same with a few new twists. The stars that players collect throughout the game now unlock the time portal, which will allow them access to the different worlds. The game map has changed a bit too in that you can now navigate through it and decide which board you want to play on.

All of fan's favorite plants are back with a few new additions including a "Bloomerang," which shoots boomerangs hitting zombies once on the way forward and back; a Snapdragon that breathes fire on the three tiles around it when zombies approach; a Bonkchoy, a "cabbage with an attitude" that punches zombies when they get close enough.

The game is expected to be available in the App Store for free on July 18 with a release on Google Play soon after. PopCap has said that "Plants cs. Zombies 2" will be a living game in that they plan to offer more maps and boards over time through updates and downloads.
