NFL Rumors: New York Jets Head Coaching and GM Candidates

The New York Jets officially parted ways with head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik earlier today. As the team enters this rebuilding phase, the biggest question on everyone's mind is who will lead the team going forward?

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports that team owner Woody Johnson is "eager to make a splash, sources said." However, that might be slightly difficult with the "A-list of former coaches like Jon Gruden and Bill Cowher remaining in broadcasting."

The Jets have hired former NFL GM Charley Casserly to help search for a new head coach.

"[Casserly] is very high on [Arizona Cardinals DC Todd] Bowles – and [UCLA coach Jim] More is also viewed as a very strong candidate within that organization, sources said," La Canfora wrote.

New York has missed out on the post-season for the last four years. Despite the lack of a franchise quarterback and some holes on defense, Johnson likely expects positive results soon. To continue to construct a playoff-caliber team, the Jets will also have to hire a new general manager.

"On the GM side, Houston scouting director Mike Macagnan has long ties to Casserly, while the team is also expected to interview Minnesota assistant general manager George Paton, Browns assistant general manager Morocco Brown, Houston director of pro personnel Brian Gaine among others," La Canfora wrote.

More candidates for both jobs will become available as Black Monday continues. Other names that have been mentioned include Chris Ballard of the Kansas City Chiefs, Chris Pioli of the Atlanta Falcons and Ryan Pace of the New Orleans Saints.

We'll keep you updated as the list continues to shrink and grow over the next few days.
