Chris Brown recently took to Twitter to announce that he may be quitting music very soon, tweeting a number of cryptic messages that have confused and surprised an array of fans and haters alike, The Independent reports.

"Don't worry mainstream America. After this X album, it'll probably be my last album," the star tweeted recently, following up with: "Being famous is amazing when it's for ur music and talent. I'm tired of being famous for a mistake I made when i was 18. I'm cool & over it!"

Hmm, what's going on here? Is Brown really quitting music, or is he baiting the media for some attention?

It's hard to say, but it's possible that Brown has simply had enough of Hollywood and the spotlight. After his highly publicized assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009 on the way to the Grammys, Brown has become a subject of controversy and disdain, and his recent altercations with artists like Frank Ocean and Drake haven't helped his reputation. At the time he attacked Rihanna, hundreds of radio stations pulled his music from the airwaves and record stores refused to sell his music.

Nonetheless, Brown has since apologized and reconciled with Rihanna (more or less), to some fan's delight and other's dismay, going on to win the Grammy award for best R&B album in 2012 for his album "F.A.M.E. and Fortune" and collaborate with his ex on a track called "Nobody's Business." His sixth studio album, titled "X," is set to be released in August or September this year. His single "Fine China" from the forthcoming album peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Despite his continued success, Brown's name has become synonymous with domestic violence, and last year, the star received backlash after getting a tattoo that appeared to be the face of a battered woman. His publicist denied that the tattoo represented Rihanna, though the tattoo has never been explained.

If Brown does quit music, would he retreat from the spotlight? While some fans on Twitter reacted with shock and dismay at Brown's claims to quit the business, others happily bid him goodbye. Only time will tell if Brown is really leaving the limelight for good.
