A Utah resident was sent to the hospital after chugging a quart of eggnog in 12 seconds to win an office holiday party contest, ABC News reported.

Ryan Roche said his coworkers convinced him to participate in the contest as he was leaving the party with his family.

"Everyone knows I'm pretty competitive," Roche said.

The 33 year old said he beat the last record of 22 seconds and earned office bragging rights along with a $50 gift card to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. But when he got home, all his former glory faded into illness as he began having trouble breathing, KCCI reported.

"Two hours later I was laying on the couch, shaking uncontrollably, nauseous, having fevers and panting," said Roche, who works in sales.

His wife stayed home and tended to their children while a friend brought him to see a doctor.

A doctor said the booze-free eggnog may have gotten into Roche's windpipe, causing pneumonia and triggering his symptoms. He was in the intensive care unit for a day and spent two more recovering in the hospital.

"It was not fun," Roche said. "It took me a full week of recovery to be 100 percent."

Despite his ordeal, Roche's coworkers still razz him about what happened.

"People are emailing me pictures of eggnog ... it never gets old," he said. "I'm pretty competitive, but unfortunately in this situation it got the best of me. But it's become quite the story."
