Fall TV kicked off earlier this week with the premieres of highly anticipated shows and the returns of some of the best comedies and dramas. One show that was receiving a lot of buzz was FOX's Batman prequel, "Gotham."

The show focuses on a young Bruce Wayne and tells the origin stories of some of the most popular villains from DC Comics. The premiere on Monday night (Sept. 22) received rave reviews but was it able to grab enough viewers to beat out its comic book competitor Marvel, which has ABC's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?"

According to Deadline, "Gotham's" series premiere ratings did not disappoint. The show nabbed 8 million viewers, with a 3.2 score in the coveted 18-49 demographic. "Gotham" held its own against shows like "The Big Bang Theory," "Dancing with the Stars" and "Monday Night Football."

TV by the Numbers reports that "Gotham" landed third in its 8 p.m. timeslot, right behind the Season 8 premiere of "Big Bang" (number one with 17.8 million viewers) and the Season 7 premiere of "The Voice" (with 12.7 million).

However (and this comparison is just for fun), the show did not beat out the series premiere of Marvel's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." According to reports, "Agents" earned a reported 11.9 million viewers last year with its premiere episode. Some reports claim that number was over 12 million.

However, the ABC show saw a decline in viewership as the season went on and ended its finale with slightly more than 5 million viewers. The second season premiered Tuesday night (Sept. 23) and nabbed 5.6 million viewers, with a score of 1.9 among the 18-49 demographic, TV by the Numbers reports. Last year, "Agents" reportedly had a score of 4.7.

Still the Season 2 premiere pushed "Agents" into second place for its 9 p.m. timeslot, right behind "NCIS: New Orleans with 17.1 million viewers.
