Marvel and ABC are teaming up for the highly anticipated, female-led TV show "Agent Carter." Actress Hayley Atwell will star as agent Peggy Carter, who works for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve) where she does administrative work but also completes secret missions for Howard Stark.

According to a description of the show, "It's 1946, and peace had dealt Peggy Carter a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad." The character was previously introduced in "Captain America: The First Avenger" and a one-shot included with the DVD for "Iron Man 3," which gave viewers a deeper look at Peggy.

Atwell recently sat down with TV Line and dished about the show and what it means to play such a strong female character.

"My favorite part is something the audiences haven't seen yet. It's the development of her character throughout the series which will be someone who is kind of more three-dimensional, something that women can relate to, as not just the competent, strong, intelligent woman in this workforce, but the psychological, emotional cost. What it takes for a woman to have to sacrifice personal relationships in order to find her place in the world and to fulfill her kind of destiny."

She said the plot is "brilliant" and confirmed that "Agent Carter" will have eight episodes for its first season. The show is set to air between the midseason break of "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."

"It's going to be a very contained, intense adventure, lots of twists and turns along the way. There isn't much time for it to breathe or become too diluted or drawn out. It's going to be a lot of adventure, a lot of action, as well as driving the plot along of this girl trying to form this better world for herself and the people around her."

"Agent Carter" premieres in January.
