A police officer from Miami charged in a drug smuggling case will be released on $500,000 bail, Local10.com reported.

On Monday, a lawyer for Miami-Date Police Lt. Ralph Mata said a bail agreement was made with federal prosecutors. According to attorney Bruce Fleisher, Mata will be released on Tuesday.

Mata, 45, allegedly provided protection, law enforcement information, and security to a drug trafficking group that smuggled cocaine into the U.S. The organization reportedly used bananas and other produce to move the drugs from Ecuador and the Domincan Republic, according to FBI officials.

Authorities also say Mata planned a hit on a rival drug group.

"Ultimately, the (organization) decided not to move forward with the murder plot, but Mata still received a payment for setting up the meetings," federal prosecutors said in a statement.

Though investigators have not released the name of the drug group, they said the group "has been distributing narcotics in New Jersey and elsewhere," in the complaint.

Mata was with the Miami-Dade Police Department since 1992. Most recently, he had been assigned to an internal affairs unit that investigates police wrongdoing, Local 10 said.

"The allegations against Lt. Mata are beyond shocking and disturbing," Miami-Dade Police Department Director J.D. Patterson said in a statement. "The community's trust is vital to us and this department is committed to seek out, identify and rid itself of individuals who violate that trust."

Patterson added that "unlawful behavior is unacceptable by the Miami-Dade Police Department and we will fully cooperate with our federal law enforcement partners in this and other investigations."
