A man was arrested for sexually assaulting a student in the shower at the University of Illinois at Chicago on Monday, CBS News reported.

Tavares Humphries, 28, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping, attempted burglary, and battery of a police officer.

Humphries allegedly attacked the woman around 10 a.m. in the bathroom on the fifth floor of the Commons South Residence Hall. Residents heard the victim's cries for help and called police. They also detained Humphries until authorities arrived.

UIC student Haley Mcintosh recalled the incident to CBS.

"It was around 10:30 I think and I woke up because I heard screaming," said Mcintosh. "They were screaming like bloody murder and it was really scary."

"My friend who was there and told him to 'stop walking away, you're staying here' and I heard they held them down."

A spokesman for the school said the students played a major role in helping the victim and arrested the suspect.

"It was a combination of the police's prompt response and the students doing their best to impede the escape of the suspect," said UIC spokesman Bill Burton.

The victim was transported to the hospital for "medical and supportive care," according to the school's website.

Humphries is not a student at the university and authorities are unsure of how he got into the building. According to school officials, the campus police have heightened patrols.

It is unclear if Humphries has an attorney.
