Microsoft adds a new keyboard key on its PC keyboard. This is the first time that the software giant integrated a new key since 1994. This means that it would also be the first time that Microsoft's keyboard layout changed after almost 30 years.

The American tech firm confirmed the arrival of the new key on Thursday, Jan. 4. This is a part of Microsoft's artificial intelligence efforts.

In 2023, the software giant added generative AI capabilities to its computer system; Copilot. For those who missed this update, Copilot is the new AI assistant for Microsoft 365 services.

Now, the new PC keyboard key will help users access Copilot easily. Here's what you need to know about this innovation.

Microsoft Adds New Keyboard Key After 30 Years

According to Ars Technica's latest report, the new Windows keyboard key is for the Copilot generative AI assistant. This will allow users to access the features easily within Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The new key is considered to be the first effort of Microsoft to expand AI capabilities into its hardware products. For those who don't have the new keyboard, the Copilot can be accessed by clicking the Windows key + "C."

But, in the newest keyboard layout, users just need to press the new key, which is placed between the alt and "<" keys. Based on the video provided by Microsoft, the new key will replace the second ctrl key on the keyboard.

This will not affect users' experience since there's already a ctrl key located at the left side of the keyboard right next to the "fn."

"The introduction of the Copilot key marks the first significant change to the Windows PC keyboard in nearly three decades," said Microsoft via its official blog post.

"We believe it will empower people to participate in the AI transformation more easily," added the software giant.

What Microsoft Expects From New Copilot Key

Microsoft said that the new Copilot key joins the Windows key as a core part of the company's PC keyboard. The tech firm stated that it expects this innovation to help users engage with Copilot seamlessly in their day-to-day activities.

It added that the new Copilot key is another transformative moment for Windows since this integration will be the entry point into the world of artificial intelligence on PCs.

"Over the coming days leading up to and at CES, you will start to see the Copilot key on many of the new Windows 11 PCs from our ecosystem partners," said Microsoft.

The software giant also confirmed that the new key will roll out before January ends.
