The lawyers of Kate Middleton and Prince William have begun legal proceedings against the French magazine "Closer" for the publication of Kate's topless photos in 2012 that had caused a royal scandal. The royal couple has asked for £1.3 million as restitution as well.

The attorneys of Kate Middleton and Prince William started legal action against French magazine "Closer" for publication of scandalous photos of the Duchess of Cambridge during the couple's 2012 vacation, E! News has learned. French lawyer Jean Veil, appearing on behalf of the royal couple, has asked the court to grant £1.3 million as damages for publishing the scandalous photos.

The duo also demanded that the damages be paid by the magazine. What is more, they have asked "La Provence," a French regional daily to pay £42,000 for publishing another set of photos. It was the first day of trial in Nanterre and though Kate Middleton and Prince William were not present, their written statement was read by their lawyer. Notably, the case against "Closer" has begun and six defendants are reportedly facing trial in the case.

They have been charged with invasion of privacy and complicity. However, the editor of the magazine, Laurence Pieau has defended the actions of the magazine saying that the photos were not shocking, Reuters claimed. Pieau said that they showed nothing scandalous and were similar to the millions of women who bathe topless on the beaches.

Nevertheless, Paul Keenan, chief executive of Bauer Media that owns "Closer" disapproved of the magazine's decision. In a statement released on the website of the magazine, he had said that the group has complained to the license holder of Closer in France for publishing the private photos of the royal couple. He also demanded that the photos be taken down immediately and ordered the magazine to refrain from publishing any other photos of Kate Middleton and Prince William.

It is worth mentioning here that "Closer" had published topless photos of Kate Middleton in 2012 when she was holidaying with Prince William on a beach in France.
