WiFi is an important staple in the life of a gamer these days. This makes choosing the right wireless router a very important task. With 802.11ac technology standard and floating around out there, there are a seemingly endless variations in routers. However, which one is best for you and your setup? Below is a list of the top five wireless routers to keep your multiplayer experience smooth, consistent and uninterrupted by crashes and dropped connections, courtesy of IGN.

Asus RT-AC66U: While many of the features that make the Asus RT-AC66U special require a bit of technical proficiency and know-how but the router is good for multiplayer and comes with excellent range. Offering a Dual-Band signals (2.5GHz and 5GHz), this router includes four wired (gigabit) access ports and three external antennas. It's secured by WEP, WPA, WPA2 and WPA2-Enterprise protecting your network with everything backed up by a Broadcom chipset. It's set-up is the only point of contention as the Asus interface makes it difficult, but overall it's still an impressive router.

Netgear Nighthawk AC1900: This router must first be noted for the fact that, quite simply, it's just cool. IGN notes that from the name to the design, Netgear's latest wireless router is something to marvel at. As far as specs go, the 2.4GHz channel leaves a bit to be desired in terms of connectivity speeds, the Nighthawk is very fast where online gamers need it to be, with a 5GHz fewquency. Moreover, thanks to the improved Quality-of-Service, the option for full VPN control and four Gigabit wired ports, the Nighthawk is an excellent router, although it may be a bit expensive.

Buffalo AirStation Extreme AC 1750: With each successive wireless router, Buffalo keeps releasing one that can top it. The Gigabit Dual Band AirStation Extreme AC 1750 continues that tradition, offering extremely great range and speeds, two things important to the average gamer. It's easy to set up but it's the only router on the list to lack IPv6 compatibility. While this isn't necessarily a dealbreaker for many gamers, it's worth noting nonetheless.

Apple's AirPort Extreme Base Station: The latest AirPort Extreme from Apple adds in 80211ac draft support and increases its range and performance with a new form factor. Even given the price, this router doesn't include all the bells and whistles of some of its comparatively priced competitors. However, it's hands-down the easiest router on the list to set up and work with. The interface is handled wirelessly and works very well compared to some of the rest. You'll only find three Gigabit wired ports on the back of the device. Also, if you're already a member of the Apple family, it's sleek design will fit in perfectly with your collection.

Trendnet AC1750: If you're looking to get the best bang for your buck while buying a wireless router, Trendnet's AC1750 is hard to beat. The speed and range that this device provides are pretty incredible, whether you utilize the 2GHz or 5GHz bands simultaneously. Setting up the device is extremely simple, even if the overall interface packed in by Trendnet leaves something to be desired. The design has a nice polished black steel look and you'll find everything you need in regards to IPv6 compatibility and four Gigabit wired ports.
