Sixteen years after "Gilmore Girls" first premiered, Netflix announced it was bringing back the series that starred Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as a mother-daughter duo. While fans are excited to see Lorelai and Rory back, many were disappointed to find out that Melissa McCarthy's character Sookie would not be returning for the revival.

While promoting her upcoming film "The Boss," McCarthy stopped by "The Jess Cagle Interview" where she was asked if there was any chance she was secretly returning to the highly-anticipated Netflix series.

"I think it's all just a ruse," host Cagle said to McCarthy, "and we're going to be surprised that Sookie is showing up on 'Gilmore Girls.'"

"I would be very surprised if that happens," the actress said while laughing.

McCarthy added that while she had no time to participate in the show because of her busy schedule, she fully supports everyone working on the project.

"I'm excited they're doing that," she said. "I think it's great. I get more questions about 'Gilmore' than anything else. The fan base is so remarkable to me, and I'm really proud of that show. I actually am excited for my girls, when they're a little older, to start watching that. I think it was a really great show, and I love that those characters are going to come back. It just, timing-wise, was not right."

Production on the "Gilmore Girls" revival is already underway in Los Angeles and will include most of its original cast members - including Graham, Bledel, Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki and Milo Ventimiglia - as well as "Younger" star Sutton Foster, who is playing a new character. McCarthy is the only major cast member not returning.

The show will pick up about eight years after the seventh season aired. Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and executive producer Daniel Palladino are both writing and directing all four of the new mini-movies, which will all be 90 minutes long. Each episode, or chapter, will represent one of the four seasons over the course of a year and will be titled "Winter," Spring," Summer" and "Fall."

"I love that they're doing movies instead of a new series. I think every way they're doing it is very cool," McCarthy said in her interview.
