Sri Lanka and Ireland face a must-win situation when they take each other on at Mohali's cricket ground on Sunday. Both teams lost their opening WT20 matches to the same opponent, New Zealand. The Shashikala Siriwardene-led Sri Lankan ladies were defeated by seven wickets by "White Ferns" in the opening match of the global twenty20 championship on Tuesday. Chasing a modest 110, the Kiwi women chased down the target with seven wickets and 4.1 overs to spare. Skipper Suzie Bates (37) and Rachel Priest (28) shared a 64-run opening stand to guide their side to an impressive victory over Sri Lanka.

Ireland Women's cricket team, which also lost their WT20 opener against New Zealand by a massive margin of 93 runs, is hoping to improve their performance against Sri Lanka. Skipper Isobel Joyce acknowledged her team's poor performance against New Zealand.

"We certainly didn't do ourselves any favours with the way we bowled in the first six overs. It would have been really difficult to pull things back after that, but we didn't even do that. We were never really going to chase 178. We just bowled poorly to our fields. We pride ourselves on our fielding and it was very ordinary. We got the angles wrong, not picking up the ball and not throwing it on time," Joyce said.
