The NZ women cricket team began its WT20 campaign with an easy win over Sri Lanka on Tuesday. The Kiwi squad, also known as "White Ferns," chased down a modest target of 110 in 15.1 overs. Skipper Suzie Bates (37) and Rachel Priest (28) shared a 64-run opening stand to guide their side to an impressive seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka.

"It's really pleasing to get the first win. The way that Sri Lanka came out in the first six and put us under a lot of pressure, it was really pleasing to see our bowlers stick to their plans and come back hold Sri Lanka to a score we knew we could chase down," Bates said in a post-match interaction.

Ireland Women, which failed to register a win in two WT20 warm up games, are looking to get back to winning ways in their opening match. Irish skipper Isobel Joyce believed that her side would face the toughest competition from New Zealand in their group. "They're first-up. There's no point for us looking at our last match (against Australia) for now. Obviously Australia are world champions and are playing very well, but so are New Zealand. For us to come out on top or pull off an upset, we need to start off from the first game against them," she said in a recent interview.
