USA Network's "Mr. Robot" was the surprise breakout hit of this summer's TV season. The series, which stars Rami Malek as anti-social computer hacker Elliot Anderson, was an entertaining mind trip for fans and a darling for critics, as evidenced by its three Golden Globe nominations.

As is customary, the show's first season was directed by a handful of different directors, with show creator Sam Esmail helming three of the show's first 10 episodes. But with an even darker turn coming in season two, Esmail is taking complete control.

Variety reports that the showrunner will helm all 10 episodes of "Mr. Robot's" second season. This is not your ordinary setup for a major cable television show. Then again, "Mr. Robot" is not your ordinary show.

TV shows typically have a quicker turnaround than feature films, making it difficult for one director to work on an entire season and maintain the necessary schedule. But "Mr. Robot" isn't breaking new ground. Cary Fukunaga directed all eight episodes of the spectacular first season of "True Detective" (too bad he wasn't around for season two).

USA Network trusts Esmail thanks to the solid ratings and fantastic word of mouth the show generated in its inaugural run. But to live up to all of the water cooler twists and turns of the first season, Esmail is really going to have to outdo himself this time around. Fingers crossed for another excellent season of television.

"Mr. Robot" is expected to return for season two sometime in summer 2016.
