Whether your Facebook newsfeed is a stream of food spots, life hacks and design ideas or a topsy-turvy mash-up of selfies, political rants and romantic drama is completely up to you.

Social media is scientifically proven to cause stress by allowing, or even encouraging, pre-date stalkers, surveillance by bosses, relationship drama, lifestyle envy and many other modern-day stressors, reports Realbuzz.

On the other hand, social media is a way to be engaged and inform, as long as you take total control over your feed to make it a catalog of healthy, educational and inspirational knowledge.

Harnessing the benefits of social media without having to suffer from its negative consequences is achievable when you take control of what you see, what you share, and with whom you communicate.

Here are simple ways to have a better social media life, according to Refinery.

1. Unfollow to avoid lifestyle envy

All of us have struggles, although some friends prefer to make people believe that they are living a dream life.

While their gratefulness and excitement to share the good news about themselves is a positive thing, they may boast too much to the point where you start to become envious. You can try to be happy for them and appreciate your own blessings. But if you can't avoid being jealous of her glossy life, you may as well unfollow her.

Life is unfair. Sometimes it's great to be inspired by the achievements of others.  And in other times, it's better to be completely unaware of the things that you're missing.

2. Unfriend strangers and exes

If you have so many Facebook friends that you don't know in real life and you share nothing in common with, feel free to remove them in your virtual world. Also, unfriending or at least unfollowing your ex helps you move on easier and keeps you from comparing yourself with his new girl.

3. Organize your newsfeed

Intimacy is one of the keys to social media happiness. It's always good to be constantly connected with people who matter to us.

To organize your newsfeed, go to Home. On the left side of your screen, click Newsfeed, then click the Settings icon then click Edit preferences.

4. Twitter Mute

If you want to stay in touch with someone and be able to direct message him, but don't want to be flooded with his tweets, try Twitter mute.

5. Block and report

Just like in real life, you deserve respect and privacy on the web. If someone crosses the line, call it to the attention of Facebook and Twitter authorities.
