Samsung's next planned smartphone chip release, the Exynos 8 Octa 8890, will mark Samsung's first premium single-chip product, according to Engadget. The chip is designed to possess everything needed for mobile computers, including 3-D design for better power performance, a custom-designed CPU and a 30 percent increase in performance over its predecessor. Furthermore, the fact that it utilizes just one piece of silicon means design options will open up due to the minimal amount of space that it will take up.

"The Exynos 8 Octa is a leading-edge application processor for next-generation mobile devices that incorporates Samsung's mobile technology leadership in CPU (central processing unit), ISP (internet service provider), and modem as well as process technology," said Kyushik Hong, vice president of system LSI marketing at Samsung Electronics. "With our custom designed CPU core and the industry's most advanced LTE (long-term evolution) modem, consumers using mobile devices with the Exynos 8 Octa will experience a new level of mobile computing."

Samsung's move to bring its own chips into its smartphones could benefit them greatly by giving them a bigger piece of the profit gained from sales, according to CNBC. This is a notable benefit given the struggle of high-end Asian companies in their competition with Apple in the smartphone market.

Although no specific release has been named as of yet, the company plans to begin mass production of the Exynos 8 Octa 8890 in late 2015, according to Business Wire.
