Mozilla has just released the new Firefox OS 2.5 and is letting Android users try it out on their phones through developer preview software, according to Engadget. Users can try it by simply installing the APK and then opening the app with a single press - no device wiping is required.

Firefox's OS 2.5 offers numerous improvements to Mozilla's mobile phone OS, including tracking protection, the ability to pin webpages anywhere on the home screen and various system-wide add-ons.

Mozilla's move is very similar to what Google did with Chrome on Windows 8 back in 2014, when they allowed users to try out Google's Chrome OS interface within the Windows platform, according to PC World. Although Mozilla is appealing more to the technically proficient with their preview, in the future they could put the launcher onto Google Play for the general public.

"If you're curious to see what Firefox OS is all about, or just interested in testing out new features, the Firefox OS 2.5 Developer Preview app makes it very simple to get started with very little risk involved," the company said in a statement. "By downloading the app, you can experience Firefox OS and explore many of its capabilities, without flashing hardware. If you decide you're done trying it out, the app can be removed as simply as any other app."
