Taronga Western Plains Zoo has announced the birth of a greater one-horned rhino calf, the first in Australia.

The male rhino calf was born on Oct. 25, to first-time mother Amala. Zookeepers are keeping a close eye on the mother and son greater one-horned rhinos but so far, both of them are doing incredibly well.

"Amala is being very protective of him," Jennifer Conaghan, the zoo's unit supervisor, said, according to Zoo Borns. "She is keeping her distance from us and keeping the calf close, which is what we expected to see."

The greater one-horned rhino is categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) Red List as vulnerable, with less than 2,700 of them left in the wild.

Matthew Fullers, the general manager of the zoo, said that the birth of the greater one-horned rhino calf is a reward for the staff after several years of hard work.

"To have this little fella born just over a week ago now is incredibly significant for the work that the team have done," he said, according to ABC News Sydney.
