Richard Gere responded a photo of himself as a homeless man on the streets of New York City via costar Jena Malone's Facebook page.

The photo circulating on social media is from a scene of the 66-year-old actor's new film, "Time Out of Mind," and shows Gere sitting on a Manhattan street corner. The picture, which mentioned that the actor "gave food and $100 to every homeless person," was posted on a Richard Gere fan page earlier this month and has since then garnered more than 1.5 million likes, according to People.

"Hi, Richard Gere here," the 66-year-old actor wrote on the Facebook post. "I was completely surprised to find that last week someone posted a photo of me on a Facebook fan page as a homeless man on the streets of New York that drew 1.6 million likes and over a half-a-million shares."

"While the story that accompanied the photograph was somewhat fictional (especially the $100 hand-outs), it seemed to have touched something important in people," he continued. "I'd like to find out what that is and what we can do together to make something good and meaningful happen for our homeless brothers and sisters."

Gere will be hosting a fan Q&A on Malone's Facebook page Wednesday morning to discuss the issue of homelessness and his upcoming film. The film's director, Oren Moverman, will be joining him for the Q&A, which starts at 11 a.m. EDT.

"I hope you'll join us. We're excited to see what happens," Gere concluded in the post.
