Liberal MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski called Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton "pathetic" on Tuesday for insinuating that rival candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders was being sexist.

"I know sexism, Hillary Clinton knows sexism, she should know better than to let her staff make her do that. She needs to do better," Brzezinski said on "Morning Joe" Tuesday morning, reported The Hill.

Earlier in the week, Sanders said that "as a senator from a rural state, what I can tell Secretary Clinton, that all the shouting in the world is not going to do what I would hope all of us want, and that is keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have those guns," according to The Daily Caller.

Clinton responded to Sanders during a Democratic women's leadership event Friday: "I've been told to stop, and I quote, 'shouting about gun violence.' Well, first of all, I'm not shouting. It's just when women talk, some people think we're shouting."

Brzezinski, who has written two books on female empowerment in the workplace, said Tuesday, "That wasn't even funny, that's pathetic."

"She needs to get out there and tell everyone to stop writing lines for her, they're bad. Really bad," Brzezinski added. "And when we talk about sexism, when we talk about women and equal pay and all things things that are important, let's not denigrate it with that stupidity. Let's not. Because we embarrass ourselves. I'm like, cringing."

Clinton often plays up the fact that she could be the first woman president, repeatedly drawing attention to the historical implications during the first Democratic primary debate earlier this month and occasionally suggesting voters should consider a candidate's gender when choosing whom to support, notes The Washington Examiner.
