A "The Walking Dead" fan in New Mexico allegedly told police that he beat his friend to death with an electric guitar and a microwave because he believed he could "change into a zombie."

Damon Perry, 23, who had been drinking a "large amount of alcohol" and binge watching the post-apocalyptic A&E series on Netflix at an apartment complex in Grants, N.M., on Thursday, fatally beat his friend 23-year-old Christopher Paquin to death, according to KOB 4 News,

Police responded to a 911 call, which stated that a man, who was later identified as Perry, was running around the building complex and threatening people with a knife. Two maintenance workers held down Perry until officers arrived. Officers later arrived to find Paquin's body badly beaten inside an apartment, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Perry told police that Paquin was turning into a zombie and tried to bite him. For his protection, Perry said he punched and kicked his friend and attacked him with an electric guitar, a microwave and other household items. Perry told investigators they had been drinking when the incident happened.

Perry is being charged with an open count of murder and is being held at the Cibola County Detention Center in Milan, N.M.

"If you've ever watched the show, you'd know that the only way to kill a zombie is to attack it in its head," Sgt. Moses Marquez told KOB 4 News. "Well, when police arrived in this complex, there was a knife inside the victim's head."

He continued: "I do believe his story behind this is true. He genuinely felt that his friend was changing into a zombie due to his inebriated state. Our department is dealing with something that I have never seen or heard of in my entire 13 years here."
