Louisiana State Trooper Darrell Thomas spotted a dog in the swamp off an interstate bridge during a routine traffic stop. It took him a minute to grasp the scene, as he would never expect a dog down below in the alligator swamp. The pit bull had been abused, thrown off the bridge and left for dead, according to I Heart Dogs.

"I thought, at first, 'that can't be a dog,'" Thomas said, according to Life with Dogs. "But I looked over the side (of the bridge), and sure enough, there she was. I made a couple of calls. The first thing that comes to mind is, who would throw a dog over the side of the interstate? Some people are evil."

Thomas called for assistance, and first on the scene was volunteer firefighter Eddie Simpson, who headed down the ladder and then clambered back up carrying the 75-lb. pit bull to safety. But not before she sustained a few alligator bites.

"She was bitten by an alligator," said Angela Robert, the animal control supervisor of St. Charles' Parish, according to WDSU. "That's an alligator bite. The other one is back here. So the gator grabbed her by the neck."

"She knew she was being rescued and she embraced it," added Robert. "She is the sweetest thing."

"She's doing well, but she's still undergoing medical treatment," Robert said. "At this point, she's still considered evidence as to the investigation. The important thing, and this is true of all of any injured dog we have, is she's staying here until she's 100 percent again."

Once recovered, the pit bull, named Ally Gator, will be available for adoption.
