October is ASPCA Adopt a Shelter Dog Month and the ASPCA pledges to celebrate the month (and all months) exalting the spirits and the charms of shelter dogs across the world, according to ASPCA. When people stop purchasing dogs, breeding dogs and exploiting dogs, and turn to the shelters to find their new best friend, the world can make a collect exhale and quietly relish the decades of hard work to achieve this goal. But in the meantime, as the old shelter motto states, "until there is none, adopt one!"

For those that already have an adopted dog, post your dog's pictures proudly all over social media and use the hashtag #MakeADogsDay, asks Today. And the tag is so appropriate, as adopting a shelter dog, actually does make his or her day - or whole life - as shelters are still euthanizing at an annually increasing rate. Last year, the ASPCA says 1.2 million dogs were put to sleep at animal shelters across the U.S. All the more reason to adopt next time you are looking for a new dog.

Popular online websites such as Adopt-a-pet and Petfinder make it so easy to look for a specific pet, showcasing thousands of pets across the world, right there at your fingertips. Find exactly what you are looking for and then head to the shelter to adopt that cutie!

What are the benefits to you about adopting a shelter dog? Our friends at the Animal Rescue Site have given a list to show you what a win/win this is for all involved:

1 - Makes you get outside and exercise. Walk that dog!

2 - Provides a new best friend/companion to both you and your family.

3 - Improves your mood - studies show an animal is a mood enhancer and lowers your blood pressure as well.

So celebrate the month, celebrate man's best friend and #MakeADogsDay.
