A 15-year-old was shot and killed in Syracuse, N.Y. Wednesday by an unknown suspect. Police swept the area, including a local cemetery, and spent a number of hours trying to find the suspects who tried to flee when discovered.

A detective arrived in an unlabeled police car at Hope Avenue in Syracuse to respond to fired shots in the area at around 7:20 p.m. The detective went directly into the location in relation to "police intelligence as well as complaints from the neighbors," Chief Frank Fowler said, according to Syracuse.

The detective then followed the suspect's car but was met with several shots from the fleeing vehicle. He was able to take cover from the shooting, but when he followed the vehicle, it was found empty.

"And they observed the occupants of the vehicle running into Oakwood Cemetery,"  Fowler added.

The police had K-9 units going around the cemetery and even a helicopter to search for the suspects, according to ABC News.

The 15-year-old victim was found dead at a porch in a house in Hope Avenue, while an injured 17-year-old was shot in the leg.

Syracuse University, which is near where the shooting took place, was put on lockdown.

"Orange Alert: (Syracuse police) investigating crime off campus, shelter in place. Remain in doors, don't let anyone in, stay out of Oakwood Cemetery," the message disseminated to the students in the university read, the New York Daily News reported.

No arrests have been made at this time.
