A street smart dog that kept his distance from rescuers, called upon them in his time of need. It wasn't his time of need, but his girlfriend and her puppies' time of need, says Answers.

Animal rescuer Marina Tarashevsce, the leader of local volunteer organization, Dallas Dog RRR - Rescue, Rehab, Reform - had spotted Hero and another dog, Mona, and tried unsuccessfully to rescue the pair that had lived in a local park, according to The Huffington Post. When she spotted Hero by himself, she was concerned for the missing Mona.

Hero, as he has since been named, knew his girlfriend was in some trouble, having just given birth to 10 puppies in the cold. She was exhausted and homeless, her puppies were sick, the whole family needed help. That's when Hero kicked in.

The super smart canine found just the right people to help him in his mission, Tarashevsce and her animal behaviorist friend, John Miller, and barked to alert them, not giving up until they followed him to the needy family.

"When I got there in the evening, Hero was barking really loudly," Tarashevsce said, according to FOX News Insider. "And it wasn't just a regular bark. He just wouldn't stop and it sounded like he was in distress of some sort.

"I had suspected that [Mona was] pregnant, so that's why I followed him. I still can't believe it, that he actually led me to the puppies. But I'm so thankful because we wouldn't have found them otherwise.

"He led us right to the puppies. He led us to a creek by the woods. And we heard little yelping of the puppies, so this is how we found them."

Hero is now available for adoption, along with Mona, through Dallas Dog RRR. The puppies will be available soon, once healthy and old enough.
