Shaker Aamer, the last Brittish prisoner of Guantanamo Bay, will be freed after being held for more than a decade without trial or being formally charged, according to the Daily Mail.

"We have been notified by the U.S. government that it has decided to release Shaker Aamer to the U.K.," said a spokesperson with the British government. "The government has regularly raised Mr. Aamer's case with the U.S. authorities and we support President Obama's commitment to closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay."

Aamer was born in Saudi Arabia but moved to the U.K. in 1996. He was arrested while volunteering for a charity in Afghanistan.

The U.S. was on the hunt for terrorists after the 9/11 attacks, and Aamer says that he was kidnapped and coerced into confessing to terrorist crimes he did not commit, The Wall Street Journal reported.

"Thank you everyone for all the support," tweeted his daughter, 17-year-old Johina. "The news hasn't hit yet. We can't believe we might finally see our dad after 14 years."

Officials report that Aamer is scheduled to be released on Oct. 25 of this year, according to BBC News.

However, this isn't the first time he has been cleared for release, and the U.S. still retains the ability to "review the inmate transfer."
