After Marvel launched it's latest foray into television with "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." DC took the opportunity to reveal that it is making a big step into the television world with Commissioner Gordon getting his very own live-action series.

Deadline reports a deal was made with FOX after a bidding war between the networks and the Warner Bros. The show will be called "Gotham" and has already been given a straight-to-series order, completely bypassing the pilot stage.

The show will mainly focus on the adventures of a young Detective James Gordon as he encounters many of the villains and criminals that have made the fictional city so famous.  Bruno Heller, of Rome and The Mentalist, will write the show, which will presumably launch during the 2014 and 2015 TV season, according to IGN.

The series will take place before Gordon meets Batman, who will not be a part of the series.  Unfortunately this means the actor Gary Oldman likely won't be playing the role. In fact, the series likely won't be directly based on Christopher Nolan's trilogy at all.

"Gotham" will join "Arrow" as TV projects sponsored and based on DC Comics characters. In addition, "Arrow" will be introducing The Flash in its second season and many are wondering if this is a setup for a potential spinoff character. If those rumors turn out to be true, there could be three super hero shows on television courtesy of DC Comics.

The character of Commissioner Gordon appeared in the first Batman comic in 1939. Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Gordon has appeared in comic books as well as almost all of the Batman films.
