Foo Fighters' frontman Dave Grohl confirmed shortly after Sunday night's Emmys that the band was supposed to perform at the awards ceremony but their performance was cancelled, according to Spin.

Grohl was not in attendance at the Emmys even though his band's HBO documentary, "Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways," bagged two Creative Arts Emmys; Outstanding Sound Editing and Sound Mixing for Nonfiction Programming earlier this month.

"We were supposed to play on the Emmys, and we were gonna play on the Emmys, and then they kicked us off," Grohl explained his absence at Sunday night's ceremony. When asked why, Grohl replied "I can't tell you. Do your research, but they did."

The Foo Fighters later announced that the Television Academy had contacted them and there was an agreement between both parties to perform a track from the "Sonic Highways" album at the ceremony, however the network later cancelled the gig.

"The band and the Academy were extremely happy and excited to have Foo Fighters play as the first ever rock band on the Emmys. Fox then refused to allow the band to play a full song from the Emmy-winning Sonic Highways," the band said, according to Rolling Stone. "That is why the band decided not to perform."

Sources say that the band was asked by the network to perform half of a "Sonic Highways" track before moving on to play their hit song "Learn To Fly." The Television Academy had no problems with the Foo Fighters' performance and the directive came straight from Fox, TMZ reported.
