Chris Pratt's Peter Quill aka Star-Lord may get top billing in James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy," but he's hardly the only main character in the enjoyable space romp. Similar to "The Avengers," Pratt's Quill is joined by a team of lovable odd balls in Zoe Saldana's Gamora, Dave Bautista's Drax, Bradley Cooper's Rocket and Vin Diesel's Groot. This dynamic worked perfectly to the tune of $774 million at the worldwide box office and it's a tone Gunn wants to shoot for again in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." But how can he repeat the same success of the first movie? By not introducing a handful of new faces that will distract audiences from our beloved heroes.

Gunn recently revealed that he has completed the second screenplay draft of the sequel and even hosted a Twitter Q&A to celebrate. During the session, one fan asked the writer and director why we won't be getting a host of new characters in the next film. Here's Gunn's response:

This makes a ton of sense if you think about it. One of the issues with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" was that it was overflowing with new characters and plot lines. As a result, no one particular storyline got its due justice and the film was met with an underwhelming critical reception.

Considering that Gunn has to reveal who Star-Lord's father is while also providing the gang of intergalactic misfits with a new adventure, it's a good sign that he doesn't want to cram too much into the film. This will allow him to further peel back the layers on the characters we are already familiar with.

However, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" won't be completely devoid of new characters.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" will hit theaters on May 5, 2017.
