On Wednesday, Apple will push a software update that will bring millions of its mobile customers a completely new looking smartphone, at least in terms of the operating system. iOS 7 is likely to roll out around 1:00 p.m., which means there's just enough time to prep yourself before downloading Apple's new look.

iOS 7 will be coming out for iPhones 4 and above, iPads 2 and above, the iPad mini and all fifth generation iPod Touches. It promises updates to Siri, a new Control Center, AirDrop, a lot of new features to the camera application and updates to the Notification Center.

For those unfamiliar with how to change up their iOS, here are a few tips to help you on your way.

Do your research: Once you download iOS 7, there's no going back to iOS 6. That means now is the time to do your research online and make sure you want the completely new look that Apple is bringing to all of its mobile devices. A good start is to have a look at some of our coverage of the upcoming new update.

Prep your phone: It would be a good idea to plug your iPhone into a computer that you trust to backup all of the purchased and saved files. In the past, major iOS downloads have not gone over too smoothly. People have reported losing their contacts, photos and even apps. Back all of these things up now while you can, just in case you lose them from your phone, they won't be lost from your life.

Set aside an hour to be without your phone: The update is expected to go seamlessly but it's still a major change to your mobile device. GottaBeMobile estimates that the process could take anywhere between 40-135 minutes depending on the steps you have to take to install it. During this time you won't be able to use your iPhone or other Apple mobile device. It's important to plan accordingly.

Don't download on the go: The update will work best with a steady and strong WiFi connection. Trying to do it at work or over 3G might be more taxing on your device and its connection services than you want it to. If you're chomping at the bit like us for the new update, we understand how difficult asking you to wait is, but trust us, doing it at home will be a lot better.

Speaking of waiting: Sometimes a lot of the problems with major iOS updates is simply that Apple's servers get overloaded with people trying to get their hands on the new operating system. If you want to avoid being a part of the problem, hold off the download for as long as long as you can, maybe even wait until tomorrow. This will also help with any unforeseen problems that might plague the launch of the new iOS 7. Expect several bug fixes as the system hits millions of users all at once, glitches are bound to be found.
