The new cast of Star Trek has paid tribute to Leonard Nimoy with a nod toward his humanitarianism, according to TV Guide. Zachary Quinto, who plays Nimoy's Spock in the new Trek films, led the way in honoring the late actor and his contributions to the world.

"Leonard was an actor, a champion of the arts and a true inspiration to so many. Leonard's love for the human spirit shone through everything he did, he touched lives around the world and he is greatly missed," Quinto said in the video posted by Wochit Entertainment.

The tribute is part of the "Star Trek: To Boldly Go" charity fundraiser, where fans will get the chance to win a walk on role in the new film "Star Trek Beyond," which is set to be released in July 2016.

The campaign champions nine global groups, with the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, a group supported by Nimoy, being one of them, according to E! Online.

Nimoy lost his battle with the lung disease COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) on February 27 at his home in Los Angeles. The original Spock was hospitalized the day before after he complained about having severe chest pains.

He revealed that he was diagnosed with the disease back in January when he tweeted to his followers: "I quit smoking 30 yrs ago. Not soon enough. I have COPD. Grandpa says, quit now!! LLAP (Live long and prosper)."
