When Fernando, a Spanish working donkey injured his foot, he was dumped and left in the middle of nowhere since he could no longer help his owners with the work.

A woman spotted the abandoned donkey while walking her dog and she immediately called Mino Valley Farm Sanctuary.

Before the rescue, the sanctuary posted a plea on their Facebook page to ask anyone to help them transport Fernando. An off-duty firefighter truck arrived to the area, which was somewhere on the outskirts of a village.

"We started out to rescue him and it began pouring rain," the sanctuary said. "We were searching desperately with torches in the darkness in hopes of finding him."

After searching for a long time, they found Fernando clambered over a patch of brambles he poked out his little head. He was taken by the sanctuary and currently resides there.

"Farm animals are often abandoned because their lives are only valued in monetary terms, and when they are no longer considered profitable, because they are too old, become sick or get injured, they are just discarded and left to fend for themselves," said Abigail Geer, co-founder of Mino Valley Farm Sanctuary, according to The Dodo.

The sanctuary is currently raising funds to build shelters for their farm animals since the cold season is coming.
