Anna Wintour wanted to make Miley Cyrus the new fashion icon. The 20-year-old singer was supposed to be featured on the December 2013 cover of Vogue magazine but Wintour has reportedly scratched that idea.

According to the Daily Mail, Cyrus' VMA performance with Robin Thicke upset a lot of people including Wintour. After hearing about the raunchy performance, the fashion editor reportedly nixed Cyrus' December cover.

"Anna found the whole thing distasteful," a source told the Daily Mail. "She decided, based on Miley's performance, to take the cover in a different direction."

The cover would have been a good boost for Cyrus' career. The "We Can't Stop" singer is doing everything she can to shed her Disney image and a spot as a Vogue cover girl would have helped shape her more mature, grown-up image.

Cyrus would have joined stars such as Beyoncé, Jennifer Lawrence and Katy Perry , who have all graced the covers of Vogue. The fashion magazine's next cover will be their 100th anniversary special edition which is supposed to hit newsstands in October. Sports Illustrated model Kate Upton will grace the cover in a one-piece bathing suit holding a cake.

Cyrus and Vogue bumped heads in the past when she released a statement saying she was "embarrassed" by a 2009 shoot done by photographer Annie Leibovitz. At the time a 15-year-old Cyrus posed naked except for a bed sheet covering her up. The only exposed area was her back.

That picture is definitely mild compared to shots of the singer now but at the time Cyrus was upset over it.

"I took part in a photo that was supposed to be artistic and now, I feel so embarrassed," Cyrus said in a statement the Huffington Post reports. "I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about."

Do you think Anna Wintour cut Miley Cyrus from the December issue because of her VMA performance?
