A toddler was saved by the family's dogs after a close encounter with a bear.

Three-year-old girl Harper Wagner was playing in the backyard of her New Jersey home when a black bear wandered up to her, Animal Rescue Site reported.

Harper screamed when she saw the bear, but her mother Emily was on the porch, too far away to do anything.

Labrador mix Chief and two other rescue dogs owned by the family rescued Harper from the 400-pound bear by chasing it away into the woods, while Emily grabbed Harper, brought her back inside the house and called the police.

"He grabbed his back leg like he was trying to pull him away from Harper," Emily Wagner said, according to CBS New York. "The other three chased him and he went into the woods over there and climbed a tree and he wandered off."

Chief was rescued by Emily two years ago and has grown up with Harper. Now, it was time for Chief to return the favor by rescuing her daughter.

Emily said after the incident that she will keep an extra close eye on her daughter, but she didn't have hard feelings for the bear.

“I’m not mad at the bear. I was mad at the bear yesterday,” she said.
