Following the historic Supreme Court ruling that establishes marriage equality for everyone in America, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige was asked about the lack of LGBT characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Despite ruling the movie landscape and making a killing at the box office, Marvel's worldwide blockbuster films have not really represented a diverse mix of peoples. The studio was rightly criticized for this and has since responded with plans for a "Black Panther" movie starring Chadwick Boseman and a female led "Captain Marvel" film. Taking things a step further, Feige was asked by Collider during promotions for the upcoming "Ant-Man" if the MCU would see an LGBT character in the next decade or so.

"I would think so, for sure," Feige responded.

It is unknown if Marvel is currently looking at its roster of comic book characters for someone who fits this description (there are a handful of interesting options). Feige has said that the big screen adaptations are meant to complement the source material and that the comics "make the path" for the films.

Fortunately, there is a lot of diversity in the comics at the moment. This includes an all-female Avengers team, Jane Foster assuming the mantle of Thor, and Sam Wilson as an African American Captain America. Fans likely wouldn't mind seeing an LGBT character on the big screen in the near future.

Looking ahead, Marvel is planning to sidestep traditional gender roles by featuring Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One (portrayed as a male in the comics) in "Doctor Strange." The aforementioned "Black Panther" and "Captain Marvel" movies are also an example of their growing diversity.
