Google is enormous and that is something that we are all aware of but a study showing exactly how big it has become was released on Monday.
According to Deepfield, an internet monitoring company that released the data, Google and it’s pack of services such as Gmail, Search, Maps, and YouTube now account for 25 percent of all internet traffic in North America.
Twenty-five percent sounds good but how significant is that in the online world?
“To put it another way, Google's bite is bigger than Facebook, Netflix, and Instagram traffic combined”, Deepfield said.
In 2010, it has been reported that Google’s services accounted just about six percent of internet traffic. Google improved a lot these past three years, according to Deepfield.
It has been noted that Deepfield’s analysis, which is focused on a "large scale" study of Internet backbone traffic across North America, incorporated a wide array of devices that connect to the Internet – computers, mobile phones, game consoles, home media appliances, and embedded devices, like Xbox 360 and Apple TV.
“I am not surprised that Google has picked up so much steam and now has grabbed a quarter of Internet traffic”, said Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, in an interview with Computer World.
"Google is making good products. I'd say that Google Mail, Search, Maps and Youtube probably account for much of the increase. But I suppose it's a good sign that less time is spent screwing off online and people are doing something that at least might be productive", he added.
For other Internet companies striving to get a bigger account of the online traffic, they can look up to Google as their example. Google have good tools, although some may not agree, that answer the needs of the people and are useful on their everyday lives.
